Another great podcast. I have to say I've always been in the "I don't like Carrol John Daly" camp. I always felt his prose fell flat, but I'm glad there are fans out there. The guy told stories that obviously entertain many people and thus he deserves to be remembered.
ReplyDeleteGreat show. The Daly timeline & appraisal is the best intro anyone will find anywhere for Carroll John Daly. Thanks for the shout-out (both of 'em!). A few points: While Black Mask editors hated Daly's work, my understanding is that he chose to leave for Dime Detective's higher word rate pay (as did Chandler & several other Mask writers). An awesome, oversized hc collection, THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF SATAN HALL (The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box, 2011), does include the serial published in book form by Steeger. Race is a great character though the plots becoming numbingly alike as time goes on. Satan Hall is by far my favorite Daly series character along with the far lesser known Doc Fay. Thanks for shining the light on Mr. Daly!
